What is an LCPC?
LCPC stands for Licensed Clinical Professional at Counselor. I am licensed by the state of Maryland to assess, diagnose and treat mental illnesses and disorders. Additionally, I am board certified by the National Board of Certified Counselors. Thus the initials, NCC.
Can LCPCs prescribe medications?
No, I do not prescribe medications, but I am happy to work with your physician to
to ensure that you get the maximum benefit from a medical regime should you choose to pursue that treatment option.
What are your fees?
My fee is $175 per session. For other services such as telephone consults between sessions, or letters provided for physicians or schools, other fees apply. Just ask.
Do you accept insurance?
I am fee-for-service provider, meaning I do not bill your insurance company directly. Your insurance company MAY reimburse you for all or part of your session. You will want to call your carrier first, and ask them if they provide coverage for 'out of network' providers.
Why are you a fee-for-service provider?
Insurance companies require each client to have a mental health diagnosis from the DSM-V (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders) in order for them to pay for treatment. This diagnosis is required within the first few sessions (Sometimes the first session) of treatment and then becomes part of your permanent health record. A fee-for-service provider does not have to give you a mental health diagnosis. This enables you to determine the length of treatment and not your insurance company. I can create a unique treatment plan based on each individuals need and not a plan based on statistical research of an 'average' client. My practice is solution focused on quality of life and personal goals. My work with clients focuses on prevention, exploration and personal growth rather than simply survival. My focus is not on reducing costs for health insurance companies, it is on quality of care for my client.
In short, choosing a fee-for-service provider guarantees the highest confidentiality surrounding your therapy. It also assures you are not denied any other benefits or services due to an existing mental health diagnosis.
I am bringing my child for therapy. What will a session be like?
A session normally begins with a brief update from the parent(s) while the child waits in the waiting room. Afterwards, I meet with your child individually, usually for about 25 minutes. Then, I meet with the parent(s) again to discuss recommendations and observations.
Do you provide counseling and therapy for adults?
Absolutely! I work with adults on a wide variety of issues.
I am currently in a custody battle with my former spouse. Can I bring my child in and ask you to recommend to the court that I get custody?
No, that is a service that should be provided by an independent ‘custody mediator’ appointed by the court. I provide therapy for children surrounding the process and consequences of divorce, but I do not recommend custody arrangements to the courts. That role would be counter-productive to the process of therapy.
My child is having trouble in school. Can you help me?
Yes. I am able to recommend strategies that can be implemented in a school setting. Upon your request and consent I can also communicate with your child’s school, gaining further insight into the issues and brainstorm strategies for a more successful school year.
Do you do IQ testing or test for learning disabilities for children?
No, I do not perform this service. I can, however, suggest avenues for you to pursue if you are interested in an evaluation. I do provide other evaluative services that may be of help to you regarding emotional development. I am happy to speak with you about this service.
What type of therapy do you use?
Like most practitioners, I use a combination of techniques. My main method is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy or "CBT". CBT is research based and time limited, making it a favorite for most clients. My practice is also oriented towards 'trauma informed' care. This means that I practice with a special awareness of all types of trauma, and their triggers, regardless of the focus of your visits with me.
